　ホイットフィールド家とジョン万次郎との交流が連綿と受け継がれ、2007年6月に第17回日米草の根交流サミットを能登半島全域で開催できます事は、大変光栄に存じます。能登半島は日本の中央に位置し、日本海に突き出た半島で三方を海に囲まれ、海・山の自然が色濃く残っている地域です。開湯1200年を迎える和倉温泉や、輪島塗を代表とする伝統、古くから継承されているキリコ祭り・青柏祭などの伝統文化、能登各地に点在する神社仏閣など魅力溢れる地域です。
　また、今回初めて純和風の旅館にお泊りいただき、日本の温泉文化にも触れていただきたいと思います。能登には「能登はやさしや土までも」と例えられる能登の風土に培われ、四季折々の風情や美しい自然景観は、住む人にも訪れる人にも安らぎと潤いを与え、おおらかでやさしい能登人の人柄を育んできました。今回は能登半島のみで取り組む日米草の根交流サミットになるため、大きな都市にはまねの出来ないのとでしか出来ない交流を展開させたいと考えます。そしてたくさんの出会いと素晴らしい感動を共有することになるでしょう。能登の人々の人情溢れるおもてなしで皆様をお迎えいたします。皆様のお越しを心よりお待ち申し上げます。
　It is a great honor for me to host this year's Grassroots Summit in Noto, an area blessed with abundant nature and a rich culture. I hope participants will enjoy staying in Japanese style hotels and bathing in hot springs. I hope also that they will enjoy meeting the Noto locals, who are famous for their kindness. I, along with the people of Noto, am very much looking forward to welcoming everyone in 2007.

　私は主人の医院で受付、薬局業務を受け持ちながら主人と一緒に働いています。4人の子供たちは独立して、今は主人とトイプードルと暮らしています。七尾市とカリフォルニア州モントレー市とは10年前に姉妹都市を提携し、活発に交流をしています。
　私はモントレージャズフェステイバル･イン能登の教育プロドユーサーとして、毎年7月に七尾市を訪れるアメリカの高校生20人の受け入れや交流プログラムの企画などをしています。13年の間に訪れた沢山の高校生の中にはプロとして活躍している生徒もいます。彼らは私のことをビッグ・ママと呼びます。この愛称は名トランペッターの故ビル・ベリー氏から贈られたものです。体が小さいのにビッグ・ママとはいかに？答えは能登でお教えします。
　今回の能登大会はとても小さな地域で開催されます。大きな都市にはまねの出来ない人と人の交流を大切に展開します。能登半島は日本の原風景が色濃く残っている地域であり、深みのある歴史と独特の文化・伝統工芸・祭りがあり、それらを愛着と情熱を持って大切にはぐくんでいる人々が大勢存在しています。この度参加される方々は体験的な人との交流の中で能登の素晴らしさをきっと感じる事が出来るでしょう。
　見知らぬ土地に舞い降りて、風土も習慣も言葉も異なる環境の中で、そこに住む人々と時間を共有する事によりお互いを深く理解し、別れの時には涙するそんな素晴らしい物語を作り上げる事の出来る交流を目指しています。

　I work as receptionist and pharmacist at my husband’s medical surgery. Our four children have left home and my husband and I live with our toy poodle. Nanao City has been engaged, for the past ten years, in active exchange with its sister city, Monterey in California. As Education Director of the ‘Monterey Jazz Festival in Noto’, I have organized home stays and exchange programs for the 20 high school students who visit Noto during this annual July festival. Some of these students are now professional musicians. I have come to be known as ‘Big Mama’ among these students. Why I am called this I don’t know, because I am not big at all, but a trumpeter student once called me this and the name has stuck ever since!
　The location for the Noto Summit is very small and this, I believe, will make it a very unique summit with chances for grassroots exchange that one would not be able to find in a large city. The Noto peninsula, with its rich history, unique culture, traditional crafts and festivals, has an atmosphere of ‘old Japan’. Among the residents of Noto, there are many who feel a deep attachment to these things and are passionately working not just to preserve but also to cultivate them. I am sure that the summit participants will discover what makes Noto so special through interaction with the local residents. It is my hope that through discovering an area with totally different customs, climate, and words and through spending time with the people who live there, participants as well as local residents will gain a deeper understanding of each other’s culture and have such a wonderful time that they will not want to part. I am looking forward to meeting the participants and welcoming them to Noto.
