Location:
West coast of Honshu (Japan's main island), one hour by plane from Tokyo.
Climate:
Early June can be quite hot and humid. Unlike the east coast of Japan, typhoons are very rare here and Nanao Bay is very sheltered.
Highlights:
Noto is famous for its unspoiled nature. The peninsula has been designated a 'quasi-national park' and its coastal scenery is amongst the most beautiful in the country. The west coast is exposed and rugged, whereas the east coast is sheltered and calm. As well as stunning sea-views, there are other attractions including mineral-rich hot springs, terraced rice fields, lively markets and delicious seafood.
History:
Much of Noto's charm can be explained by reference to its history. The area was isolated from the rest of Japan for a long time and was ruled by the powerful Maeda clan that encouraged scholarship and the arts. It therefore developed a unique and very rich culture, as can be seen in its famous pottery and festivals. Noto preserves a traditional Japanese atmosphere that is difficult to find anywhere else in the country today.
