日米両国は、緊密な同盟関係を築いており、東日本大震災では、米国からは多大な支援が提供され、強固な二国間関係であることが改めて明確に示されました。
私は、我が国の外交の基軸である日米同盟を一層強固にする考えです。この同盟関係の基盤にあるのは、両国国民の幅広い相互理解と信頼です。その観点から、草の根交流は重要な役割を果たしており、公益財団法人ジョン万次郎ホイットフィールド記念国際草の根交流センター（CIE）の益々の活躍を祈念いたします。

I commend the John Manjiro-Whitfield Commemorative Center for International Exchange (CIE) for its continued efforts to foster deeper friendship between the people of the United States and Japan. In particular, the annual Japan-America Grassroots Summit serves as a bridge between our two countries. In our increasingly globalized world, people-to-people exchange programs like this one are more important than ever. The mutual understanding, empathy, and amity they create form the foundation on which enduring global peace and prosperity is built.
